Margaret Godfrey is an award-winning conceptual artist whose paintings explore stories, events, and ideas through vivid color, intricate patterns, and layered symbolism. A single painting often becomes the starting point for a larger body of work, as one idea leads to another and gradually develops into a connected series.

Research is an important part of Godfrey’s creative process. She investigates the subjects behind her paintings to give them authenticity and depth, then uses symbols, decorative elements, and recurring patterns to reveal their underlying stories. Her work moves freely between representational and abstract imagery and incorporates watercolor, acrylic, ink, and collage on paper. She is particularly recognized for her distinctive use of patterns and shapes.

Godfrey lives and works in Oregon’s McKenzie River Valley. The surrounding landscape, her travels throughout the United States and abroad, and her engagement with social and historical subjects all provide inspiration for her art. Since losing her home and studio in the 2020 Holiday Farm Fire, themes of resilience, memory, and renewal have also entered much of her work.

In addition to maintaining her studio practice, Godfrey shares her enthusiasm for art by teaching workshops and participating actively in regional and national art organizations. She is an award-winning member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon and has participated in the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Hawaii Watercolor Society, and other professional associations.

Her work has appeared in juried exhibitions across the United States, on book covers, and in a children’s book she illustrated. Godfrey’s paintings are held in private and public collections in the United States, Canada, Honduras, and Japan.
